Generation Squeeze

I worked with Generation Squeeze, a Canadian, non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of young adults, for an information design project. This project, Homes First, aims to educate people in their 20s to early 40s about various issues and discrepancies facing their generation versus the generations before them. 

Young people, especially women are the target audience for this set of infographics that will be shared online. The goal is to get them to act and sign a petition. I designed 6 infographics that illustrate the data using a Myth/Reality format, using typography and a limited colour palette that visually ties this project to Generation Squeeze’s branding.

Data point: Average earnings for a typical 25-34 in Canada needs to grow from around $50,000 to $93,400/year to manage an 80% mortgage at current interest rates (2019).

Data point: Average home prices would need to drop by nearly 50% for a typical person aged 25-34 to afford an 80% mortgage.

Data point: It takes a typical 25-34 year old 13 years to save a down payment on an average home in Canada, compared to the 5 years it took when today’s boomers were young adults around 1976 (2019).

Data point: 63% of people aged 18-29 self-report having anxiety. This experience is stronger among women, with 71% of women under the age of 30 saying they feel this way. (2018) Other research shows that financial insecurity – whether the cost of living, housing affordability, or income inequality – are clearly a primary concern for most Canadians. (2019)

Data point: How long it takes to save up for a down payment in various cities in Canada: 17 years in Victoria, 13 years in Kelowna, 14 years in Hamilton, 12 years in Kitchener, 10 years in Ottawa, 9 years in Edmonton, and 9 years in Halifax.
